Going Home Again: family communication tips for adults
You are an adult now – you really have your employer thinks you are an adult!. Your friends have no doubts about your age and adulthood. You pay your bills, keep a busy calendar, negotiate your rent or mortgage, and it leads more "adult" responsibilities. And – most of the time – You actually believe you're an adult …
Then the phone rings, there is a knock on the door or you are in the process the honor to meet that adult responsibility – a visit with your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins or other extended family members – And suddenly seem to shrink to small stature children. While the law says that you are officially an adult at a certain age you can not really feel until several years later "grown up". But someone forgot to tell the family! Your parents (and others, saw you grow up) see you even as a child. You're still going to your family, a child. No matter how successful you are, your family may have a hard time forging a new relationship – with the adult whom you now are. This is normal and happens to most of us.
But something else is happening in families over the years, family members and develop rehearse -. over and over again – a family script. Everyone has a role and is expected by others, that dictated a consistent line through acting out this role. Might have They had the experience to predict what your parents say before the words can actually be heard. However, if a person significantly changes the scenario, all other likely to be surprised and try mightily to bring the perpetrators back on track.
For example, maybe you were always the shy, quietest considered – one that would go straight down, instead of making waves. But that's not the adults, where you are now. They have learned how confident and have to be overcome (mostly), the shyness. So – you go home and try new assertive on your family. You have now optimized the script and changed the rules – without telling anyone anything. You probably will not like your family react, one that does not cause such problems – as they get back the child they once knew to try.
The harder your family ever again working on the old you, the more likely it is that they successfully will be. That is, unless you, as you know your family about the person you happened to be educated. If you do not, you will probably leave all these Interactions feeling, once again, as the child you thought you'd left behind. Perhaps feeling guilty contributed to the family discord, anger discounted to get frustrated at "failing" one more time with your family or just sad that the progress that you thought you'd been gone seems to be – at least for the moment.
The bottom line may be that what could have been a pleasant, non-conflict interaction have, has now turned into the "old story" you went through as a child. And you may end up (no matter what age you are now) needs little help and time, the feeling, once again, how did the responsible adult you really are.

12 TIPS FOR MORE EFFECTIVE ADULT Communication in the family
1 – Remember (often!) that it's normal to forget your family, you are a Adult!
2 – Preparing for calls and visits, so that you do not have to improvise on the spot.
3 – Make a list of positive features of the mature person you are now. Add the responsibilities of adulthood – especially you, your family not recognize in yourself. For example, a list could include items such as these: financially responsible, good parents, successful independent a life, stable friends able to speak, if necessary, etc.
4 – Include on your list, even the little positive in your life, such as paying from a small debt, something difficult with a friend, etc.
5 – Write to examine each item on a small card, If you have memories of who you need to.
6 – Take some time alone (in a call or visit) to remember your successes – and how good it feels. Observe your body feels different and is probably less tense when you come into contact with the competent, confident that you will remain. Remember the feeling – you'll need it later.
7 – Practice positive self-talk, with your cards, if needed to return the good feeling that comes from the memory of your successes.
8 – Prior to use every interaction with a potentially problematic family member, You talk to yourself and those who remember how confident and competent you are really in the most in your life. If something happens in a call while you that childlike feeling back, apologize for a minute (to visit Bath, urgent phone call, etc.) use, and this time to read the cards! Then the conversation back.
9 – Do not change the rules, change the font, without telling the other person. If they do not expect otherwise, it will work even harder to get things back to "normal".
10 – You might want to have this page the explanation for the changes to try your family: First, see what happens. Then explain what you want or plan to do.
11 – Connect a version of the recognition for their efforts in every statement.
12 – Try something like this for a rule change to announce: "I know I'm sounding a little different (recognition), but I would really appreciate it if you would hear me on this (which you want). "Or:" I know you are about me (recognition) is concerned and I really appreciated. I promise to let you know if I am a little help (What you do, plan) need. "
